Dr. Schneider will use the funding to study dyslexia. More specifically, this study will directly test the magnocellular theory of dyslexia, a prominent but controversial theory proposing that dyslexia, a prevalent reading-specific disorder affecting 5% of the population, is caused by a malfunction of the magnocelluar system of neurons in the brain. This theory has been difficult to test directly because these neurons are not easily isolated in the cortex, but we will measure them in the subcortex using high-resolution functional magnetic resonance imaging. The results of this study will resolve the validity of the magnocellular theory of dyslexia and will help researchers better understand the disorder and develop new treatment strategies.
