On behalf of our students, faculty, and staff, I welcome you to the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences at the University of Delaware.
Although ‘Psychology’ has been taught here in Newark since 1888-1889 and in a Department of Psychology since 1916, we officially became the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences in 2014. The change in name reflects our grouping within the college’s natural science portfolio, the breadth of our discipline to understand mind, brain, and behavior at all levels, and our commitment to science-based applied work.
Our department is home to roughly 1200 undergraduate majors and 400 minors. We have two major tracks within the department – a Psychology BA and a Neuroscience BS. Students can minor in psychology or neuroscience. All majors are supported by faculty and peer mentoring, a flourishing undergraduate research program, numerous study abroad opportunities, and individualized field placement and internship possibilities.
Our department is organized around four concentrations of research and graduate training that is highly collaborative and interdisciplinary. Our graduate students and full time faculty conduct basic and applied research in behavioral neuroscience, clinical science, cognitive psychology and social psychology. Reflecting the centrality of the brain to the Psychological Sciences, we have significant neuroscience representation among our faculty and the entire department is excited and enthusiastic about our state-of-the-art, multimodal imaging center, located next door, which brought human fMRI capability to our Department’s research portfolio in 2016 and small-animal fMRI capability in 2018.
We have exceptional and friendly faculty and staff, cutting-edge research, and world-class
students who make this a truly unique and amazing department. We are passionate about raising public awareness and understanding of science and have several programs that bring
departmental members into engagement with the local community. We are enthusiastic about our position as a hub science whose scientific contributions advance many other scientific disciplines as well as our own.
