Stanton is interested in the developmental psychobiology of learning and
memory and its applications to developmental neurobehavioral disorders. His
current research focuses on the development and neural bases of incidental
learning using various contextual fear conditioning and novel object
recognition paradigms. This work is an
extension of his interest in ontogeny of multiple memory systems in rodents
and humans that has involved the eyeblink conditioning paradigm. Dr. Stanton uses Pavlovian conditioning and
novel-object paradigms in animal model studies of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum
Disorders (FASD). He also studies
eyeblink conditioning in children with FASD through a collaboration with Drs.
Joseph and Sandra Jacobson and their collaborators at the University of
Capetown Health Sciences, South Africa. The broad goals of Dr. Stanton’s
research are to better understand the ontogeny of brain memory systems in a
manner that addresses mechanisms and treatments for FASD in human
