  • D. Michael Kuhlman, Professor Emeritus

    Professor Emeritus
    Newark, DE 19716

    Biography

Dr. Kuhlman's research falls into two general categories: Socially Interdependent Decision Making and Fundmental Dimensions of Personality.

    Socially Interdependent Decision Making:

Dr. Kuhlman's main interest here concerns individual differences in Social Value Orientation (SVO), a predisposition to approach social relationships with either Cooperative, Individualistic or Competitive goals. He studies how SVO differences relate to decision making in Social Dilemmas and other economic decision games such as Ultimatum and the Trust Game. In addition, Dr. Kuhlman studies the non-verbal communication and detection of SVO at zero acquaintance. In collaboration with Professors Janusz Grzelak (Warsaw, Poland) and Toshio Yamagishi (Tokyo, Japan) Dr. Kuhlman studies cultural differences in trust and preferences for different types of social control.

    Fundamental Dimensions of Personality:

In collaboration with Professors Marvin Zuckerman (Emeritus Professor, University of Delaware) and Anton Aluja, (University of Lleida, Spain) Dr. Kuhlman has developed the Zuckerman-Kuhlman-Aluja Personality Questionnaire (ZKAPQ) which measures the five factors of Zuckerman's Alternative Five Model of Personality. The factor structure of the ZKAPQ has been translated into 16 languages and its factor structure has been shown to be robust in 23 different countries.
