Research Interests

social value orientation, Interdependence Theory, relationship structure and trust

Research Summary:

I work with Dr. Mike Kuhlman and fellow graduate student Madeleine Page studying Social Value Orienation (SVO), a personality variable describing one's attitude toward strangers (Cooperative, Individualistic, or Competitive).

My particular interests span the following topics: The evloution of cooperation as the modal SVO; The encoding and decoding of SVO via non-verbal behavior or emotional expression present in still photos; How partner trustworthiness, power structure, and SVO affect attraction to and behavior in dyadic relationships; The definition and operationalization of trust in the social interdependence literature.

Our lab's most recent and immediate future projects involve having people make personality judgments of targets based on still photos of the targets. One goal of this work is to begin to understand how much information is needed for naiive judges to accurately guess the SVO of a stranger, and what information judges are using to make these guesses. This will help us to understand how people can use a stranger's facial cues to decide whether to interact with a target, or to determine how they will behave in interactions with the target. People's ability to do this has implications for the evolution of cooperative behavior and traits.

I was also recently involved with a project with Dr. Beth Morling studying the accuracy of personality judgments at zero-aquaintance, using video clips of targets.
